Democracy in Libya
Following years of institutional fragmentation, executive authority remains divided between the interim Government of National Unity (GNU) in Tripoli and the eastern-based government in Tobruk/Benghazi. While the planned 2021 general elections were stalled due to legal and constitutional disputes, rival leaders endorsed a UN-backed political roadmap setting a revised target to hold unified presidential and parliamentary elections by February 2027.
